Interior designing course deals with the studies on designing the interior of living and working spaces. There will be many areas of specialization in an interior designing course. If you have been appreciated for arranging your room or designing a space with right furniture, colours, and lightings then a career in interior designing can be right for you.

Studying an interior designing course requires creativity, imagination, an artistic approach to the things, communication skills, coordination and management abilities, and business and marketing skills. Originality of ideas and innovations in designs are two critical factors if you really want to shine in the profession. If you are confident of these skills and abilities, then you can definitely pursue an interior designing course and become a successful interior designer.

Five steps to become an interior designer

One: Study an interior designing course

Thought a formal education is not a must, most of the top interior design firms hire people who have a bachelors or master degree in interior design. A degree in the specific field is preferred. Interior designing course is offered by numerous reputed institutions all over India.

Students who have passed or about to appear in the qualifying Plus Two standard (Higher Secondary) exam are eligible to take up an interior designing course. So, in order to increase your chances of being recruited by the top companies, make sure you take formal education.

Two: Gain practical knowledge

Just studying an interior designing course is not enough to become a successful interior designer. While interior design is a field of fierce and intense competition, having a strong practical knowledge is a must to shine and even exist in the field.

Though an interior designing course will help you enhance your skills and abilities and learn all the theoretical concepts, make sure you also learn to transform that theoretical knowledge into practice. Working on projects, getting internships in big companies and volunteering for different organizations during the course will help to increase your practical skill.

Three: Build a strong portfolio

Displaying high-quality examples of your works and projects compiled in a professional, well-organized portfolio will be crucial to starting your career as an interior designer. In your interior designing course you will get guidance from your instructors on creating a nice portfolio.

A well-built portfolio will not only help top employers to see the quality of your work and projects you completed but will also give you a chance to show off your creative skills and abilities. Make sure that you keep quality photographs of all of your works and projects to compile them in your portfolio.

Four: Find a job

Having a strong portfolio in your hand, now it is the turn to find a right job. As we mentioned, holding a degree in interior designing course alone will not help you find a job in the field. Currently there is a need for 100000 interior designers in India alone. The industry is growing at a rate of 20% and is expected to do so until 2018. So, you just need to knock the door until it opens.

Competition is high, so a high paying, professional job may not be easy to find. Start with small projects. If you are skilled, bigger one will come in your way. Again we say, just study of interior designing course will not bring you the job.

Five: Grow your network

This is very important for the success in your career as an interior designer. While the college where you study interior designing course gives you knowledge, strength of your network gives you projects and brings you money. While in college, take advantage of career services to search for jobs and connect with alumni in the field.

Let the neighbors, friends, family, community organizations, businesses, contractors, manufacturers, and builders know your skills and services using all possible different effective strategies. This will help you get their projects and establish yourself as a brand.

So, all start with pursuing an interior designing course and polishing your designing skills and marketing abilities. Always keep in mind, practice is the key and network is the door.

Creativity simply courses from his young heart, up his arms and through his finger tips on to paper as portrait after portrait emerge in exquisite detail and mastery, rarely seen in an 18-year-old. Akhil Shah developed his passion for drawing at a very young age inspired by his mother, Haseena, who also shares his desire for drawing. On the Malayalam channel ‘Mazhavil Manorama’, TV hostess Rimi Tomi once challenged him to do a portrait of her which was done instantly and she was remarkably impressed.

On another occasion, Nyla Usha of ‘Minute to win it’, again from the popular Malayalam channel ‘Mazhavil Manorama’ program dared Akhil to draw her and he proved comfortable with accomplishing the task. Akhil loves to draw and does it with all the passion he can muster.

Nyla Usha

When probed to reveal any other talent lying dormant, Akhil admitted he sought out opportunities to act whenever he found time. His impersonation of actress Surabhi Lakshmi on You Tube single handedly enacting the celebrated Ganga vs Nakulan scene from box office hit Malayalam movie ‘Manichitrathazham’, went viral on FB.

He dreams of a career in architecture and is currently undergoing coaching classes for the NATA qualifier test from Vismayam College of Art & Media, Calicut.

He did his schooling partly from ISS (Islamic Service Society) and completed from GMHSS (Govt. Model Higher Secondary). Akhil’s family including his father Kunhamu, mother Haseena and siblings Nidha Fathima and Allen Shah, much younger to him, hail from Perinthalmanna in Malapuram district.

It was evident Akhil was a nature lover as well. At the ISS school, he was a part of the Eco club and had actively contributed in laying a garden at the school along with his friends. In his spare time, he indulges in a bit of cooking –  a quality acquired from his mother who he is very close to. His special dish is the ‘fruit & nut’ cake.

Goods and Service Tax, famously termed as GST, is the biggest move by Indian Government. It was launched on July 1, 2017. It is considered as the biggest reformation in the Indian Indirect Tax structure. Its main purpose is maintaining ONE SINGLE TAX from the hands of the manufacturer to the hands of the final customer. The actual meaning is that the final consumer of the goods will have to bear the entire tax.  Different taxes such as VAT, Excise and service tax will all be under one name – GST.

There were four GST bills that were passed in the Union Cabinet,

  • Central GST bill
  • The Compensation Bill
  • Integrated GST Bill
  • Union Territory Bill

While there are some difficulties faced with GST, it’s in a way good as there will be an Uniform tax. The manufacturers will benefit hugely from this as their tax rate is reduced.

” The smart room needed a fresh lick of paint and I was voicing my thoughts out aloud when our Sr. Faculty, Faris Kandoth Sir, remarked “why don’t you handover this task to our Sidhique who should be able to do a good job.” “Sidhique who?” I queried. “

Sidhique-ask-Multimedia-student

“The young lad from Kommeri poised to scale dizzy heights”

“There is a young multimedia student in first year BMMC who is an enterprising fellow and does part time work to pay his fees here” Faris said. This moved me because I’m aware that life is tough and if there is someone amidst our student folk who is willing to offer his services for money to remit his tuition fees, then he definitely is the person I’m assigning to get the job done. Very soon I got to meet Sidhique and his close friend Danish ready to take up the task I was entrusting. “Sidhique, I would also need the services of an electrician, if you know anybody?” “No problem sir, I can handle that one also, myself” he replied brimming with confidence. Couple of days later we had our smart room ready with two coatings of cream colored paint and elegant electrical fittings replacing the worn out switches. I immediately call up the youngsters and am profuse with my appreciation.

I am curious about this lad and decide to trace his footsteps from whence he came. Sidhique is the second child born to Jaleel, a construction worker, and Sulekha, a homely housewife and along with his sisters Raihana and Najma live in Kommeri, Calicut. “I learned how to cook from my mother. I can cook anything except ‘biriyani’”, Sidhique explained about one of his multifarious skills.

He completed his +1 from Azchavattom HS and +2 from JDT High school, where he befriends his close pal, Danish who was to influence the way Sidhique’s life was headed. From an early age, Sidhique developed the habit of organizing his own finances and rarely depended on his father, Jaleel (a construction worker and sole earner in the family) for money. He had gathered a little knowledge of plumbing courtesy his father and he remembers the one time when the Corporation pipe broke down right in front of his house disrupting the water supply in the region. Typically no one bothered to repair it until young Sidhique took it upon himself to mend the damage and restore availability of water. Needless to say, word got around about his prowess and soon the neighborhood began to depend on him for any small time painting work, plumbing assistance or electrical repairs. The young lad began to enjoy small streams of money flowing into his pocket and practically learned to look after himself.

Sometime in 2013, a technology wave surged the markets to bring on the smart devices revolution and young Sidhique was no exception to its influence. He wanted a smartphone like anybody else, but the problem? No funds, and Sidhique was not in the habit of touching his father or mother for money unlike the youth of today whose parents pump in money at the smallest request of their progeny. The solution to the problem Sidhique faced lay in the neighborhood. He approached the workers running a local industrial in the vicinity who agreed to teach him welding – an art he mastered within a short time span. The new skill fetched him work at the same unit and he soon became part of the crew completing a four storey structure. He also successfully raised the sum for his smartphone from the venture. The youngsters of today would profit hugely by taking a leaf out of Sidhique’s practical approach of seeing things.

sidhique k-house

Sidhique’s home nestled between palm and banana trees.

When Raihana (Sidhique’s elder sister) got engaged, the whole family sat around to discuss the matter of impending marriage expenses and on overhearing the ongoing dialogue, young Sidhique stepped in and offered to paint the house and redo the electrical lines. It took him a little over a month to do a decent job of it toiling late into the night after returning from school, often sticking to the job until the early hours, losing precious sleep, and then getting ready for school all over again. The boy was focused.

sidhique ask with friends

” Boxed in by his close ‘feline’ friends, Danish (left) and Kunju (right)

“How did you learn about Vismayam College and seek admission here?” I pried. “My friend and mentor from my JDT days, Danish, had attended a counselling session about a multimedia course that he mentioned to me that, in turn, prompted me to do the same. That’s how I happened to meet Faris Sir” and the rest is history. Not only did Sidhique live life on his own terms, but his academic achievements were always above average right through his school days and he took to the multimedia course (BMMC) like a duck to water.

Sidhique is twenty years old and talks about great dreams for the future and his story is posted here to touch the lives of other youngsters like him who seek the silver lining in clouds to lift themselves out of the mundane and stifling lives they are lost in.

On the occasion of the 103rd Women’s Day celebrations switching the spot light on Rose Mary Lillu (BMMC 2012/ 2015 batch – Vismayam College of Art & Media)

Rose-Mary-Lillu-with-Prithviraj-vismayam-college-calicut(4)

For, that is where Rose Mary Lillu finds herself today, a position in the Malayalam movie industry where women rarely, if ever, have set foot, and even more rarer, to have succeeded in the effort. Today, Rose Mary is an online movie poster designer by profession and has already contributed to film projects like Vettah, Rajamma@yahoo, Aakashavaani, Darwinte Parinamam, Amar Akbar Antony, Rani Padmini, Charlie, Anarkali, Enu Ninte Moideen, Premam and so on. She was involved in creating the first look posters of movies for the social media, even before shooting actually began and invariably solicited ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ from movie fans that helped to set up a pleasant pre-launch environment for the movie. It is no mean task to land big banners in movies that go on to become mega hits and rub shoulders with experts from the industry, but Rose Mary seems to have pulled it off with aplomb. The quality of her work has left an indelible mark in the field of poster designing in the Malayalam cinema industry.

As a child she used to be passionate about drawing that later drove her to join Vismayam College of Art and Media in Calicut to pursue Media studies and take the BMMC degree course from there. On turning 20 years she started freelancing. After College she joined a private designing firm in Kochi and it was here that she happened to do a digital painting work with cine artiste, Neeraj Madhav. This was also the time when 2D posters were popular and Rose Marie’s specialization in caricature art work made her an instant hit on the circuit.
Rose-Mary-Lillu-vismayam-college
In one and a half years Rose Mary appears to have established her mettle in the industry and poised to explore more opportunities from Kochi. She also ventured into Story Board drawing. The recent movie ‘Nishan Kasper, directed by Shyam Kumar, has characters created by Rose Mary. The idiosyncrasies and mannerisms of each character is brilliantly conveyed through her art work. Another movie on the anvil pending release is ‘3 Musketeers of Kishkind’. She has also drawn story boards for short films like Escape, Birthday and Red drops. Besides digital painting she also indulges in doodle art, mural painting, polygon art, oil painting and wedding caricature invitations.

Rose Mary is the second daughter in her family who hails from Pulikurumba in Kannnur. Her brother, Abin, works in Dubai. Her father is Sebastian and mother, Elsamma. Apart from the burning ambition and deep sense of direction that propels her career forward, Rose Marie claims “the huge support of friends and family is the chief driving factor in my achievements”.
So the message Ms. Lillu enacts in her life for all the young feminine generation to emulate is “when passion and skill work together, expect a MASTERPIECE.”
